This declaration of the promise ‘to work the land for the common good’ paraphrases the words of Manuel Azaña, who is shown later in the film making this speech: ‘We, the people of Spain obtained the land and the right to cultivate it by democratic election but fascist landlords try to take our land away. Now we are forced to fight for the defence of the Spanish earth.’ These ideas are quite naturally recycled in other cultural texts – both produced at the time and since. Blockade, a film made by William Dieterle in 1938 makes similar points. Holding a handful of earth, Marco, the farmer turned soldier (played by Henry Fonda), explains the importance of his link with the land to his shepherd-friend Luis:

Do you ever think about this, Luis? Life comes from it. Gives us bread and wine. The secret of life is hidden in the ground. Man must learn that secret and use it wisely not waste the richness of the soil … Take a deep breath and smell the earth. It belongs to us Luis, and nothing can take it away from us.
